Over the past several weeks, I’ve spoken with a wide range of leaders—NCAA athletic directors, pro sports executives, and senior partners at national and global AEC firms. What I keep hearing is strikingly consistent.


The more skilled someone is, the more they’re asked to carry.

The more they deliver, the more that gets added to their plate.

Until, gradually, their capacity is maxed out—and their influence begins to thin.


We don’t talk about this enough. But we should. Because the long-term health of our firms—and our people—depends on it.


A 2023 AEC industry survey found that 42% of senior leaders have considered leaving their firms due to burnout, unsustainable demands, and a lack of support. A separate McKinsey report revealed that 1 in 3 executives plan to exit early because of unmanageable pressure and no clear succession plan.


Here’s the truth:

The best leaders I know do more than perform—they multiply. They coach, mentor, and create space for others to rise. They don’t just lead from the front; they develop the bench behind them. They don’t just deliver results—they create capacity. They invest in the next generation.
